Potters Bar People Protest
at loss of many grand trees in Oakmere Park

Here's the email that alerted webmaster to what is going on

"Please could you cover the removal of several trees from Oakmere Park in your next edition? Over the last 2 months contractors began removing undergrowth, then progressed onto the removal of several youngish trees- and this week an old tree was cut down. There is now a growing concern amongst residents that more trees, in particular the older ones, will be cut down. We feel that the park management are more concerned about the appearance of the park in order to win awards, than trying to create a haven for wildlife and to protect the established mature trees. Notices have now been appearing around Potters Bar to appeal against this culling. One regular park user told me that when she tried to stop the cutting down of the old tree until she'd spoken to the council, she was met with abuse from the contractors. By the time she'd returned from phoning the council, the tree was already cut down.

Information about the work being carried out could've been displayed on the information board in the park outside Oakmere House - the one which cost thousands to install.

We would appreciate if you could investigate this matter further and offer an explanation to the situation"

Here's the response from Doreen Scivyer, Chair of Parks Group of Potters Bar in Focus:

"This matter was discussed at a meeting on 24th. March of the Parks, Open Spaces and Green Belt Group of Potters Bar in Focus. Tony Morris the parks officer explained their insurance company insisted on removing trees which could be a danger. The Group strongly disagreed with this opinion but the matter is out of our hands."
